Improving Digital Photography Exposure

There is little more frustrating then taking a picture that you think is going to be a masterpiece only to find out that it was either over exposed or underexposed. Flaws in exposure can ruin the photograph. One of the advantages with digital cameras and exposure is that you know if there is an exposure problem as soon as the picture is taken, but knowing that the picture is over or under exposed doesn’t do you any good if you don’t know how to correct exposure problems. Don’t Take It Personally The important thing to remember is you are having exposure problems is that you aren’t alone. Anyone who has ever used a camera have dealt with more then their fair share of under and over exposed photographs. The trick is recognizing what you did to create a exposure problem so that you can avoid making the same mistake the next time you take a picture. What Is Exposure? Before you can take the steps to correct your exposure problems you have to at least have a working knowledge about what exposure is. When someone says that the photo is overexposed they mean that the photo is so bright they are unable to clearly see the image. An underexposed picture is exactly the opposite, when a photograph is underexposed the photo is so dark the image isn’t visible. Correcting Exposure Another perk digital camera’s enjoy is that many of them are equipped with technology that allows the camera to adjust the shutter speed and aperture when there is the potential for a exposure crisis. If you are still having trouble with your exposure you will have to manually adjust your camera’s shutter speed and its aperture. Manually adjusting your camera’s exposure can sometimes be as simple as changing your camera’s focal point. If that doesn’t work you will have to use your camera’s controls to adjust the ISO settings. The ISO settings are what determines your camera’s sensitivity to light. Adjusting the ISO setting varies with each camera so you will want to read your digital camera’s owner manual before you attempt to adjust the ISO to improve your exposure. There are some computer software programs available that will help correct exposure problems. Exposure Tricks Photographers who are really good know lots of tricks they can do with exposure. These tricks include double exposure and multiple exposure. Really good photographers also know how to use over and under exposure to add a dramatic quality to their photos.
